“60 Minutes” Episode on
One Laptop Per Child?
Barclay Poling, Global Missions and Outreach
A low budget cutting edge computer for children in developing countries for less than $200? That’s right! This is actually now happening in the month of December, and you can hear all the details “live” by going to this exciting interview on the web: http://www.olpctalks.com/nicholas_negroponte/olpc_60_minutes_interview.html
MIT Professor Nicholas Negroponte, and founder of One Laptop Per Child, is interviewed by famed reporter Lesley Stahl of CBS News, and they discuss Negroponte’s “Big Dream” to empower children in 3rd world nations with a very serious computer disguised like a toy. You can draw on it, take pictures, compose music, do your lessons, and it has 2-3x better Wi-Fi range than your $3000 laptop! The computer is highly weather resistant and can be even be dropped in water without damaging it! The screen is also remarkable because it can be seen outdoors in the sunshine! That’s great news for kids in places of the world where school is being conducted outside beneath a tree – like much of Southern Sudan.
By the way, enrollment is expected to exceed 700 children at our school in 2008 – the school will be opening again in early February thanks to the generous support of Hudson members.
Each year the Global Missions Committee at Hudson has a Tutors’ Brunch for community and church members who tutor the Ya family children: Dan ( Sanderson High School), On ( Carroll Middle School), Markos (Brooks Elementary), Nika (Brooks Elementary) and Maria (Brooks Elementary). Even Dona (4 year old boy) is now “enrolled” in the Hudson tutoring program! Judy McRoberts reports that all the children are now working at, or above grade level. Many thanks to Nina Miller, Global Missions Committee member for organizing this very nice function.
