Report on Maleng-Agok Primary School
by Barclay Poling,
Chair of Global Missions Committee

The Field Coordinator, Mr. Wol Bol, for the Education Outreach Mission of HMPC and the Southern Sudan Fellowship Southern Sudan, had a very successful mission this past fall (9/05/05 – 10/26/05) to bring critically needed food and school supplies to the Maleng-agok Primary School in Southern Sudan. Upon his return to Uganda, his own daughter, Cholhok, fell quite ill, and we did hear from him for several weeks. Just after Thanksgiving we received an email from Wol that his child was doing much better, and he said he would be sending a full report about the fall mission trip in December. On the 2nd Sunday in Advent we finally received Wol’s report and a CD full of pictures of the students and teachers (that we are posting to the church website under Outreach and Global Missions). Please go to www.hmpc.org to see how much healthier and happier the students are looking than a year ago.

In Wol’s report to HMPC (dated Nov. 28), he states, “The community (of Maleng-agok) are so happy for the great work that you are doing towards these children.” The generosity of HMPC members in 2005 was amazing, and for the September-October trip Hudson provided nearly $15,000 to buy supplies needed to keep the school running through the end of the school year (November 30).

The Global Missions Committee is currently asking for your financial support of this very worthy mission early in the New Year. Our immediate goal in January is to try to raise $15,000 for the purchase of school supplies, food and some building materials that are needed for completing a kitchen facility, as well as to pay the teachers and workers. This is an ambitious goal, but with the school’s opening on February 1st, the help is truly needed now. Wol will begin to purchase the supplies in Kampala, Uganda (where he lives), as soon as HMPC can wire the money. It is our prayer that we can have Wol on His way to Southern Sudan with fresh supplies by the end of the month, or early February. The enrollment in the school this past year was officially 578 students (grades 1-8), and they are projecting about the same for 2006. The curriculum of the school is based on that of Uganda public schools, which is composed of courses in English, Math, Religious Education, Arts and Crafts, Social Studies and Agriculture. All courses are taught in English, except the local language, Dinka, which is used for Primary Grades 1 and 2.

We would greatly appreciate anything you can do to help. Donations can be made to HMPC, and please be sure to note the Sudan Education Project on your check You can also download a sponsorship form to see the different categories of giving, from $25 that will pay for a child’s breakfast the entire school year to $60 to cover a child’s tuition for the year. A check in the amount of $1,200 will pay the salary of 1 teacher from February through November (the school has 15 teachers). Click here to download a sponsorship form.
