11.29 Advent Devotional

Prepare the Way, O Zion

Prepare the way, O Zion,
your Christ is drawing near!
Let every hill and valley
a level way appear.
Greet One who comes in glory,
foretold in sacred story.
O blest is Christ who came
in God’s most holy name.

Scripture - Isaiah 40:3-5

3 A voice cries out:
“In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord,
make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
4 Every valley shall be lifted up,
    and every mountain and hill be made low;
the uneven ground shall become level,
and the rough places a plain.
5 Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,
and all people shall see it together,
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

Devotion - "Prepare the Way"

For ten days last November our family hosted a gathering of old friends who traveled to our home for the occasion from Colorado, New Jersey, and London.  Talk about preparations!  Menus and food and drink, sheets and pillows and towels, local activities and places to visit, arrival schedules and transportation, toilet paper and paper towels, clearing out closet space, ordering PG Tips tea bags. . . .

As I worked my way through these endless lists, I found myself thinking about each friend who was coming--recalling times spent together, remembering funny stories, increasingly feeling grateful for such rich and deep friendships that had held strong through time and over distances.  The burden of preparation began to turn into joyful anticipation of their arrival.

Likewise, the preparations throughout the season of Advent--hymns, scripture, the lighting of the candles each week--can lead us into the joyful anticipation of "the Word made flesh."  Emmanuel. God with us.

Many of us find that an intentional practice is important as part of our Advent reflections and you may want to consider this one. The Hunger Action Team suggests you set aside one food item or a small amount of money each day to stock the Food Pantry at North Raleigh Ministries. Click here for more information.

Due to Covid-19, we will have worship services available online. Presently our church building is closed.  We will give appropriate notice when our building opens again for worship and various group activities.  Thank you for your understanding and patience.  Worship, educational groups and other activities continue to happen virtually. The building is closed, but the church is open."

We welcome your request to be added to our Prayer list.  You may click here to submit a request electronically, or you may call 919-787-1086 and press 2 for the Deacon's Prayer Line.
