Mac Schafer, Pastor & Head of Staff
Mac has served as pastor & head of staff at HMPC for 11 years. He is married to Katy and they have four children. Mac loves to walk his dog, bike the Greenway in Raleigh, read, journal, tend to his small garden, learn from his teenage kids, walk labyrinths, cook pies and get some form of physical activity into his day. He has been a pastor in the Presbyterian Church (USA) for 21 years. He is a life long learner and a trained spiritual director. He has served congregations in Arizona, New Jersey, Florida and Belfast, Northern Ireland. He has his Doctor of Ministry from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, a Masters of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary and a BA from Elon College.
Dr. Debbie Kirk – Associate Pastor for Spiritual Growth and Nurture
Debbie Kirk joined the staff of HMPC in January 2005. She is a native Floridian and as a lifelong Presbyterian grew up spending summers at Montreat, where she regularly attends conferences and retreats. She is a graduate of Maryville College and received her Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary. She holds a Master of Arts in Christian Education and Doctor of Ministry in Pastoral Theology from Union Presbyterian Seminary. Debbie has served as Christian Educator, Associate Pastor, and Interim Pastor several congregations and prior to moving to Raleigh she was on the staff of Westminster Presbyterian in Charlottesville as Interim Associate Pastor and Presbyterian Campus Minister at the University of Virginia. She has been the Moderator of New Hope Presbytery and the Presbytery Coordinating Body where she is serving a second term. On sabbatical in 2018 she spent time in Jordan, Israel and Italy. For relaxation Debbie enjoys traveling, entertaining with family and friends, walking with her dog, and reading a good book on the beach.
Aleta Ash, Part-time Minister of Visitation
Aleta is a retired pastor and is pleased to be able to assist in providing pastoral care to the Hudson congregation. She served as a chaplain and pastor in Topeka KS and as pastor of Milner Memorial here in Raleigh. She is a graduate of Emory University where she received her BS in nursing. She considers her 22 years as a nurse in public health, geriatrics and hospice as a wonderful preparation for the ministry. She obtained her Masters of Divinity degree from St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City and has been ordained in the PCUSA for 24 years. She and her husband Ron moved to Raleigh in 2007 and he is a member of Hudson. They have 3 children and 4 grandchildren and enjoy spending as much time with them as possible. Aleta likes to read, walk the greenways, draw and write, eat Ron's wonderful cooking, and loves to laugh. Keep your faith and your sense of humor is her motto. Contact Aleta
Frank Boyd - Director of Youth Ministries
Frank Boyd is a Raleigh native. After graduating from Broughton High School, he attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, receiving a BA in Philosophy and Religion. He also has a Masters of Arts from The Presbyterian School of Christian Education and a Masters of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary. Frank has a life-long calling of work with youth and their families in educational ministry in the parish. He has followed this calling by serving as director of youth and family ministries in multiple large church settings, including First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, United Church of Chapel Hill, First Presbyterian Church in Asheboro and Black Mountain Presbyterian Church. Frank is married to Bobbi Jo Boyd, who is a Professor at Campbell University’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law in Raleigh. Frank is the proud father of four wonderful boys – Blair, David, Abel, and Jack. Frank is an avid woodcarver, and also enjoys music and storytelling. He believes that "the shortest distance between two people is a story."
Rachael McConnell - Director of Children and Family Ministries
Rachael and her family recently moved to the Triangle from Austin, Texas, Rachael's hometown. Rachael met her husband, Josh, while going to college in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Rachael has a BA in Psychology with a Minor in Music from The University of Texas at Arlington and a Masters of Divinity from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. She is also a Canidate for Ordination in the PC(USA). Rachael and her family enjoy traveling, watching movies/funny youtube videos, and being a baseball family. In the brief moments Rachael has to herself as a mom of four boys (baby-teen), she enjoys eating with friends, discovering new places, cooking, and singing.
Pepper Choplin - Interim Director of Music
A Raleigh native, Pepper attended Millbrook High School. With a Bachelor of Music degree from the UNC at Greensboro, he earned a Master of Music in church music and composition from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. For 23 years, he served Greystone Baptist Church in Raleigh, directing children, youth, adult and handbell choirs. His published works include over 300 anthems plus 26 cantatas and three piano books. Beyond his choral music, He has produced two humorous CDs and an inspirational recording. Pepper has conducted eight concerts of his music at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center with 250 voices and full orchestra. He has also conducted eight original cantatas at Raleigh’s Meymandi Auditorium with over 200 voices and orchestra. In 2019, he directed Handel’s Messiah (Christmas portion) with the 165-voice Cary Community Choir with orchestra.
Pepper and his wife, Heather have three daughters, Kelcy, Erin and Deanna. He is an avid cyclist who has participated in North Carolina’s Mountains to the Coast ride and the 102 mile Assault on Mt. Mitchell. To learn more about Pepper - www.pepperchoplin.com. Click here to contact Pepper
Pat Cash - Church Business Administrator
Pat grew up in Connecticut, but has lived in Raleigh for over 20 years. She joined the HMPC family in May 2001, as Publications Director, and became Church Business Administrator in August 2009. Pat and her husband of 46 years, Jay, have 2 married daughters, two grandsons and 1 granddaughter.
Cheri Thomas - Bookkeeper
Cheri is originally from Fayetteville, NC, but has called Raleigh home since 1997. She has an Applied Mathematics degree from North Carolina State University and owns a small Automation firm with her husband of 16 years; together they have 2 daughters. In her free time, Cheri enjoys spending time with family, traveling and volunteering at her children’s schools. For the summer, Cheri will be in the office Tuesday-Thursday from 9 am to 2:30 pm. Hope Parangi - Church Hostess
Hope grew up in Ridgefield Park N.J. where she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She transferred her membership to Hudson shortly after moving to Raleigh in 1995. She and her husband Max have two daughters and 1 son. She is a Deacon, and active with promoting and taking care of the labyrinth. Hope had worked for many years in the Hudson Memorial Preschool. Hope has continued to enjoy working with children and has been employed at Highland Childrens Center for the past 5 years. She has her Teaching Credentials thorough NCDCDEE from Hayward Community College.
Carol Yeargin - Organist
Carol is a music graduate of Meredith College, and also a recently retired Wake County elementary music educator. She has served as a church organist and choir accompanist in the Raleigh area for over thirty years, and also sings in the Master Chorale.
Gina Hayek - Children's Choir Director
Gina is a native of Michigan, and has resided in North Carolina for over 30 years, where she has taught elementary and middle school music since 1983, serving most recently as the choral and general music teacher at Baileywick Elementary. Gina is Nationally Board Certified in early/middle childhood music. She has also served on the music staff of a nearby, active Methodist church. Gina is an accomplished singer, and has performed in several of the productions of the Opera Company of North Carolina, ns well as the Capital Opera Company. She has sung with the Capital Area Community Chorus, and has toured the US with Norman Luboff Choir in addition to Europe with an International choir from Michigan. Gina was married to her husband, Mark, in the Rose Garden of the Raleigh Little Theater in 1999 and is now the busy mother of two 7 year old twins, Jeremy & Carina.
Dorothy Roche - Preschool Director.
Dorothy is a Raleigh native, raised right here in North Hills and graduated from Elon College, now known as Elon University. She has worked in early childhood development in various roles since 2003. Dorothy has a "hands on" style and loves interacting with the children, families and teachers. In her free time Dorothy loves to cook, read, listen to podcast and spend time with her family.
Joyce Hawkins - Preschool Assistant Director
Joyce Hawkins joined the HMPC family as Assistant Preschool Director in February 2002. Joyce grew up in Malaysia, and graduated from Purdue University. Joyce and her husband, Jeff, have a daughter and son.
